History of The Oakleaf Golf Complex
The Oakleaf Golf Complex was originally developed by the Aycliffe Development Corporation in the early 1970s, on that had previously been used for agriculture.
it was originally a 9-hole course with no driving range or shop. There was a slot machine which golfers used for their green fees. Facilities have since then been improved dramatically and updated.
The Golf Course was handed over to Great Aycliffe Town Council and from there the course has developed;
- 9-hole course to 18-holes in 1998
- Driving range added
- Shop built
- Toilets, shower and changing facilities added
The heart of the Complex is a nice parkland, 18-hole pay-and-play. Though on the short side at 5169 yards off the yellow tees, it is immaculate and an excellent test of golf whatever your ability. You can make it more of a challenge by adding some white tees and composing your own layout.
Clearly, a course this size favours the shorter hitter. Indeed, with a length of 4,655, the Golf Complex is perfect for women and junior players. The facilities are first class and the length of the course means its daunting for beginners and intermediates – but even skilled golfers find the test fair. Add that all together and you can see that the Oakleaf Golf Complex is the perfect place to learn how to play or improve your game.
Over 500 season ticket holders, the golf course is thriving and with the added benefits of;
- Floodlit driving range
- Pro golf shop that caters all abilities and budgets
- Lockers
- Practice areas
We have three full-time green staff, who do an excellent job of keeping the course immaculate. The greens are in very good condition and play very true. The fairways are lovely and well defined with extensive areas of established woodlands and planted areas. There is a fair bit of sand, but the bunkers tend to be flat.
