West Cemetery
Construction of West Cemetery started in 1993 and was completed in 1994, since then the landscaping of the site has become established and provides suitable shelter and privacy to visitors. The Cemetery was opened for burials in January 2000.
A full list of all graves is available from our Burial Records page and a drawing of the cemetery is available from the West Cemetery Map. Or View area on Google Maps
With reference to the site plan all sections to the West side of the main central road line and the cremated remains section to the North of the curved wall feature are consecrated.
The Bishop of Durham carried out consecration of these areas on 17th May 1994.
Detailed plans and registers are kept in the cemetery office and may be referred to in the event of difficulty in locating any particular plot, however please note that the cemetery office is not permanently staffed.
The cemetery is open to the public from 8 am until dusk. Pedestrian gates will be unlocked at all times. The main entrance gates will only be open to funeral vehicles and mourners at the time of burial. Special arrangements may be made by application to the cemetery’s officer.
Pedestrian access is permitted outside of these times on evenings and weekends.
The cemetery gates will be closed when funerals are taking place. Staff will notify visitors to the cemeteries by placing a sign on the gates at least 24 hours beforehand. We ask that residents respect this so family members are able to attend their loved one’s final journey whilst maintaining social distancing and limiting the visitors to the cemetery.
Any visitors in the cemetery will be asked to leave 30 minutes prior to any services taking place.
The main car park should be used at all times when visiting the cemetery.
